Perforation gauge stamp value questions usually come down to this: the gauge itself is rarely worth anything on its own, but it is one of the details that decides which catalogue variety you actually own.
This is a narrow, technical part of identification, but it trips up more people than it should, because two stamps that look identical to the naked eye can be catalogued at very different levels once someone measures the holes around the edge.
What does perforation gauge actually measure?
Perforation gauge counts how many perforation holes fit into a two-centimetre span along an edge of the stamp. Printers used different perforating machines across the life of an issue, sometimes switching mid-run, and those machines did not all punch holes at the same spacing. A stamp perforated on one machine might measure gauge 11. The same design, printed later or by a different plant, might measure gauge 12 or 14. To the eye, both stamps look like ordinary perforated stamps. Only a measurement shows the difference.
Catalogues treat these as separate listings because they usually correspond to a real historical difference — a different printing, a different year, sometimes a different printer altogether. That is why gauge matters for identification even though it says nothing about condition on its own.
How do you measure it properly?
You need a perforation gauge, a small printed card sold by stamp supply dealers. Some are a straight ruler with rows of dots at different spacings; others are a rotating disc you turn until a row of dots lines up exactly with the perforation holes on the stamp. Either works. Lay the stamp against the gauge and slide it until one row matches the tips of the perforations precisely, not roughly, then read off the number for that row.
Measure more than one edge. Many issues are perforated the same on all four sides, but a meaningful number are not. When the top and bottom differ from the left and right, catalogues call it compound perforation, and it is listed as its own variety with its own number. Missing this is a common way people misidentify a stamp and then chase the wrong price.
It helps to measure a few ordinary stamps first, ones you already know the gauge of, so your eye gets used to what an exact match looks like versus a near-miss. A gauge reading that is close but not exact is not a match — round numbers in perforation gauge are meaningful, and half a point off means you are reading the card wrong, not that the stamp is a wide, in-between variety.
Why does the gauge change the value?
Because catalogue pricing is assigned per variety, not per design. Scott, Stanley Gibbons, Michel, and Yvert & Tellier all list separate line items for the same picture printed with different perforation gauges, and those line items can carry very different values. One gauge might represent the ordinary, mass-produced printing that survives by the millions. Another might represent a short-lived experimental batch from a machine that was only used briefly, which survives in far smaller numbers. The design is identical. The scarcity is not.
This is the same logic that applies across all of stamp collecting: value tracks how many good copies survive, not how a stamp looks. A run of 68 million of one printing keeps that variety cheap indefinitely, while a limited perforating trial of the same design, even from the same year, can be scarce enough to matter. The gauge is simply the physical fingerprint that tells you which one you are holding.
None of this bypasses condition. A rare-gauge stamp with heavy creasing, thinning, or badly off-centre printing is still a damaged stamp, and buyers price the damage first. Gauge identification tells you which reference number applies; it does not exempt the stamp from ordinary grading.
